Look Towards the Future, Not the Past by NyonDragon

When Aravae and her twin brother, Arvid were born, they were separated in fear of them being killed by humans who hated Half-Elves. Their mother, Caranorel Elaéyadar (elf), died shortly after they were born. Arod Rimwar (human), their actual father, took them and gave Arvid to a noble family that were close family friends. (Will make an Arvid backstory later) Aravae was given to a family that her parents thought were their friends, but they tricked them. Aravae was abused and beaten by them. Her 'father' was a doctor and used Aravae as a test subject. He would hold her down and  inject her with mysterious medicine just for the fun of it. He loved seeing her suffer. They would give her just enough food and water to keep her alive. When she would get 'in trouble' her 'parents' would tie her up and whip her; sometimes they would tie her to a chair and submerge her under very cold water. Which led to her being deathly afraid of water; also being unable to swim. They would almost always lock her in her room, and on occasion let her outside to get fresh air. She had finally had enough, and, on the evening of her 16th birthday, she ran away from her abusive family. The next day they saw Aravae had ran away. They wanted her back so they told the authorities. They acted like they were heart broken and were 'so sad' that she had ran away. They would give a 5,000 gold reward to anyone who found her and brought her back to them.

She ran all night. She knew her family wanted her back, but that didn't stop her. She finally came to a village. She went into a tavern to rest,  she found a seat in the back corner of the tavern and sat down. A man, who obviously had a little bit too much to drink, came up to her "Hey little elf," he said "What do you think your doing here?" He asked. Aravae tried to ignore him, she knew he was drunk. "Hey?! I asked you a question." He said grabbing her arm and jerking her out the chair. "Ow." She fell to her knees and looked at him terrified, not knowing what he was going to do. "Stop...please." She said starting to tear up. "Awe, poor elf." He said sarcastically. Other people in the tavern noticed the man picking on Aravae, but they wouldn't help her.  A boy a little older than Aravae noticed him picking on Aravae, and confronted him. "What are you doing?" The boy asked. "It's none of your business, Go away kid!" The man replied. "That's no way to treat a lady." He said narrowing his eyes. He beat up the man. She was confused. Why anyone would try to help her? "Why did you help me?" She asked the boy. "No one should treat a lady like that." He said.  "Thanks." She said not looking at him; knowing when she looked at her 'parents' they would slap her.  "What's your name?" The boy asked. "Aravae..." She said, still avoiding eye contact. "My name is Luke Abrell," he said. "Do you have nowhere to go?" Luke asked holding out his hand helping Aravae up. "No...I ran away." She replied grabbing his hand. "How would you like it if my family adopted you?" He asked. "Ok." She said reluctantly. He noticed the scars on her arms and legs. "Don't worry, they wont harm you." He added. "Ok." She agreed. "Good." He smiled.  Thus, the start of a new life and a great friendship.
